Ch-ch-ch-changes (part 2)

I recently announced a major change in my life — being accepted to graduate school.  I’m now ready to announce another big change — fatherhood.

With school and a newborn on the horizon, I’m going to have a lot less time to do things like blog.  I’ve considered my options, and come up with a plan to redistribute my effort.  I’ll continue writing twice-weekly posts on my Journal and Courier weather blog (although that may end up dropping to once-weekly).  Blog Fiasco will no longer have twice-weekly updates, but instead will be updated as I come up with posts.  The Beonard’s Losers feature during college football season will probably not happen again next year.  It’s fun, but it takes a lot of time and effort to write and record in the appropriate manner.

By making these changes, I can hopefully continue to meet my responsibilities at home, at work, and in school, as well as my commitment to the Fedora project.

All of this, of course, is subject to change.

There’s no such thing as too much blogging

At least, I hope there isn’t.  If there’s an upper limit to the amount that a person can safely blog, I might run up against it soon.  It’s been an exciting week in FunnelFiascoLand.  In addition to all of the storms we’ve been having, and a sizable to-do list both professional and personal, I received some news.  The first news is that I’ve been selected for the LISA ’10 blog team.  In November, I’ll be off to cloudy San Jose, California where I’ll be writing multiple posts per day for the duration of the conference.  Additionally, I’ve been told I might have a few writing assignments in advance of LISA in order to help promote the event.

A bit earlier in the week, I was asked by the Managing Editor of the local newspaper if I would be willing to write a weather blog on their website.  Since I am incapable of turning down requests for more work, I readily agreed.  This is a voluntary/slave labor/public service matter, but I’m trying to finagle a fedora with a “press” tag out of the deal, or maybe I can score press credentials to outdoor events. The thought process behind my willingness to do this, and some discussion of licensing issues involved, is a blog post that will probably appears in the next week or two.  In the meantime, my “Weather Watch” blog starts on www.jconline.com/blogs today.  I plan to update it twice per week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

It seems my writing is starting to get noticed, and that pleases me greatly.  I’ve still got a long way to go until I catch up to my great uncle Ralph, the New York Times best-seller and a Pulitzer nominee, but it’s exciting to know that there are people out there who care about what I have to say.  (Of course, I know my loyal ones of readers here have always cared about my thoughts. You guys are awesome).  What this means for me is a fair deal of extra work, but it’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to it.

The prodigal blogger has returned!

Hi, everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve head a blog post.  I’m not dead or anything, don’t worry, I just haven’t been that inspired to write much of anything. I think the trick is going to be to write less for some imagined audience and more about whatever it is that’s on my mind.  I have to understand that not all of my readers will enjoy all of my posts, but as near as I can tell this is the only weather/sports/sysadmin/high-performance computing/high-throughput computing blog in the whole world. So I’m writing this first, and then I’ll get a few posts pre-written to give me a bit of a buffer.  Oh boy, this should be exciting!

Oh man, where did I go?

For the first time in the history of this blog, I had a new post for seven days in a row.  Wow.  I’m really not sure how that happened, since I rarely have anything to say.  Coming up with pointful content on a daily basis is apparently a really hard thing to do, and the more I try, the more respect I have for people that manage to do it.  I’ve tried to cheat and write several posts at a time, and then schedule them to publish the next day.  Even then, I just don’t know enough or something.

So for the time being, this is a post to let you know I’ve updated a page.  The About Ben page now makes reference to my membership in the Fedora Project’s Documentation group.  Yay.

Some FunnelFiasco updates

I know it doesn’t happen very often, but some FunnelFiasco updates got made today.  Most notably, I’ve updated the “About Ben” page.  I’ve also made a few minor changes here and there.  Over the coming months a few more changes will be made, mostly to streamline things.  As a matter of economics, I’ll be changing the hosting package I have.  The only real restriction is that I’ll have 10 subdomains instead of unlimited.  For the amount of content I have, that’s fine.  The wedding subdomain has been nixed, since it hasn’t been updated since I got married nearly a year and a half ago.  The kc9fyx subdomain will be nixed soon, once I make sure all of the links have been updated.  Not like htere’s any content there either. 🙂

I’m also pondering moving the blog to a platform like Blogger, since I never seem to get around to performing the WordPress upgrades.  Or maybe I’ll just do the install and future upgrades through Fantastico.  The fact that there’s not currently a way to move non-Blogger sites into Blogger makes it rather difficult.  We shall see.
